Soot particulate collected from a Euro III heavy duty diesel engine run under black smoke conditions was investigated using thermogravimetry, transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The characterization results are compared with those of commercial carbon black. The onset temperature toward oxidation of the diesel engine soot in...

During aging processing, black carbon (also called soot) particles may tend to be mixed with other aerosols, and highly influence their radiative forcing. In this study, freshly emitted soot particles were simulated as fractal aggregates composed of small spherical primary monomers. After aging in the atmosphere, soot monomers were coated by a thinly layer of sulfate as thinly coated soot parti...

Time resolved laser induced incandescence (LII) technique is used to measure size distribution of soot nanoparticles of candle's flame. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to heat nanoparticles to incandescence temperature and the resulting signal is measured. Mass and energy balance equations are numerically solved to calculate temperature of soot particles in low fluence regime. Assuming Plank black ...

OBJECTIVES To explore chimney sweeping work tasks, chimney sweeps' use of protective equipment, and type of fuel used by clients, over time. Further, to assess work-relatedness of current eye and airway symptoms. METHODS In a cross-sectional study in 2011, male Swedish chimney sweeps (n = 483; age 21-69 years) answered a questionnaire about their occupational history and eye and airway sympto...

We use global models to explore the microphysical effects of carbonaceous aerosols on liquid clouds. Although absorption of solar radiation by soot warms the atmosphere, soot may cause climate cooling due to its contribution to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and therefore cloud brightness. Six global models conducted three soot experiments; four of the models had detailed aerosol microphysical...

Emissions from solid-fuel cookstoves, used by almost three billion people worldwide, create major issues for both human health and the environment. These emissions cause an estimated 4.3 million premature deaths annually and significantly contribute to environmental issues such as global climate change. One of the harmful emissions is soot and a promising option for reducing soot emissions from...

We find evidence that black soot aerosols deposited on Tibetan glaciers have been a significant contributing factor to observed rapid glacier retreat. Reduced black soot emissions, in addition to reduced greenhouse gases, may be required to avoid demise of Himalayan glaciers and retain the benefits of glaciers for seasonal fresh water supplies.

The purpose of this work is to propose a detailed model for the formation of soot in turbulent reacting flow and to use this model to study a carbon black furnace. The model is based on a combination of a detailed reaction mechanism to calculate the gas phase chemistry, a detailed kinetic soot model based on the method of moments, and the joint composition probability density function (PDF) of ...

Soot particulates are sampled from a EURO-IV standards diesel engine and investigated by high-resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM) and thermal gravimetry (TG). The experiments reveal a drastic reduction of primary particle size down to less than 20 nm, much smaller than that emitted by earlier diesel engines (EURO I-III). HRTEM reveals primary particles with deformed fullerenoid structures. T...
